Exoneration of a Stain

(Debris Book)

This seventy-page hand-bound book was made with cream Rives BFK paper.  The book was created by using digital photographs taken at a junkyard, charcoal, monoprints on wax paper, ink, pencil, watercolor, acrylic, wood stains, colored pencil, and gouache.  The book is a response to debris and aging on inanimate objects, the objects’ connection to humans, and an attempt to find beauty in what has been discarded.  By taking photographs of these cast-off objects and creating prints and drawings in response to them, I am elevating the importance of these objects by memorializing them before they are ultimately destroyed.  Rust, mildew, and stains on the objects become beautiful patterns that make each object unique.  Most of the linework in the book was drawn with unfixed charcoal, allowing each drawing to create imprints and ghost images on the facing pages, forcing the book to change over time, just as the objects it depicts have evolved.
