Euphemisms for Modern Living

(Memory Book)

This seventy-page hand-bound book was made with cream Rives BFK paper.  Approached as a non-linear sketch diary or daybook, this book studies the passage of time over a 30-day period in my life.  A collection of prints, sketches, writing, stitching, and random jottings, this book is a study focusing on the aspects of our memory that we hide from ourselves and from each other and its ability to mask and cover up.  By working with layers of imagery both representational and non-representational, I was able to depict the ways in which my memory disguises itself, disassociating and associating different aspects of itself.  Parts of pages have been covered up, traced over, or blocked out completely, allowing the viewer to experience the book as if it were a mysterious puzzle.  The ephemeral qualities of people, places, and things are the overriding themes in this book.
